Large Wallaby Box (2022) - A Waimate wallaby skull surrounded by the bones of other small animals as well as some marine specimens. The work also contains the skulls of pigeon, prion, rat and a hedgehog as well as a number of rabbit skulls and the feet of a Little Owl. The work is contained in a repurposed kauri frame. $500 NZDRacoon Foot #2 (2023) - A racoon skull surrounded by chicken and other bird pelvises, a sheep pelvis, wallaby bones, possum skulls and magpie. $1200 NZDCaprine (2021) - A goat skull fused to a horses mouth by a matrix of small bones from introduced animals floating out from the wall on a rod. $750 NZDThe Baboon and the Rabbits (2018) - A female chacma baboon skull (Papio ursinus) surrounded by layers of rabbit skulls and bones inside a custom case made from recycled native timber. $1500 NZDKahu Peka Peka (2017) - 40 x 40cm - (Bat Cloak) The skull of a Canadian Grey Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), the pelvis of a large bird and the limbs of a possum embedded in a matrix of rabbit, possum and bird bones inside a custom-made wall hanging box made from recycled Kauri. $1000Sister Skeleton Leaf (2020) - 30 x 40cm - A new experiment making a face out of paper mixed with leaf skeletons inside a custom made wall hanging box made from recycled native timber. The leaf skeletons are Mahoe leaves ((Melicytus ramiflorus) from Ross Creek Reservoir. I call this piece 'Sister Skeleton Leaf" as the face reminds me of a Catholic woman from the Tudor period. $1,000The Hare And The Rabbits (2021) - 30 x 40cm - A hare skull surrounded by rabbit skulls and bones inside a custom made wall hanging box made from recycled native timber. $750White Square #1 (2015) - 65 x 80cm White Square is focused around a beautiful lichen-covered steer skull and contains the bones of cows, sheep, wild pigs, possums and ostriches as well as two cat skulls, two ferret skulls, one rabbit skull, one snapper skull, one unidentified fish skull and a tooth (complete with gold filling) donated by a friend.Mummified Pigeon Skeleton in Recycled Wood Container - Bruce Mahalski (with help from joiner, Eric Neuman) 2023, 30cm wide x 40cm high, $600Black-backed Skull Box #2 (2016) - 35 x 35cm Eighteen black-backed gull skulls in a custom-made recycled kauri box. All of these birds died on the beach outside the artist’s studio in Owhiro Bay in Wellington (NZ). Many of them feed at a nearby rubbish tip and drink and bathe in a stream polluted by run-off from the tip.Filius Sole (2017) - (The son of the sun) is a life-size mask made from the upper and lower jaw of a horse, part of the skull of a snapper and what I think is the skull of a ling, plus other bones from rabbits, possums, dogs, cats and wallabies.Kiribati Warrior (2014) - A life-size portrait bust of a warrior from the Kiribati Islands, made using crushed bone for the face and thousands of small bones from rabbits, possums, ferrets, stoats, a cat and numerous small birds. The spines on the head are from a large snapper. The sculpture is partly inspired by a life-size model in Otago Museum (Dunedin) of a Kiribati Islander wearing a helmet made from the skin of a porcupine fish but it also references the films ‘Hell-raiser’ and ‘Prometheus’Manu Ika #2 (2022) - 'Bird Fish' is a life size mask made of snapper jaws (eyes), free range chicken pelvises(the middle part) and Black-backed gull pelvises (the sides). I made this piece because I was so pleased with the first one which lives permanently in the Museum. It took me three years to be able to accumulate enough materials to make this second one which is in many ways very similar to the first one but in other ways is very different. The Bird Tooth Colt Pistol (2012) - This small (15cm long) life-size pistol is covered with the bones of small sea-birds (mostly broad-billed prions), rabbits, sparrows, and starlings. The main skull is from a black-backed gull. The teeth are from cows and sheep and the trigger is a hedgehog’s jaw.Mere de Rat (2016) - 195mm x 265mm 'Rat Mother' is cuddling a rat skull in paws made from the feet of black-backed gull. The top skull comes from a vervet monkey. The rest of the bust is made from the bones of Bennett’s wallabies, brush-tailed possums, rabbits and snapper. The custom-made recycled kauri box was made by Rowan Saker.Fish Monkey (2023) - 'Fish Monkey' is based around the skull of a Vervet money sitting inside the jaws of a massive snapper. It's surrounded by three sheep pelvises inset with more snapper jaws, wallaby bones and the dried feet of a large domestic parrot(cockatoo). It comes in a custom made recycled native timber case. $1500 NZDDog Tooth - The weathered skull of a border collie surrounded by sheep and cow teeth inside a custom made wall hanging native timber box. $750 NZDKiwa (Sea Guardian) Mask - A life size mask made from four snapper jaws, coral , crab and small bones. The spines are from the dorsal fin of a snapper and the eyes are made from sand dollars - a kind of echinoderm related to sea urchins. 35cm x 40cm, $2000
